About. For 60 years, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has worked to help people and nature thrive. As the world’s leading conservation organization, WWF works in nearly 100 countries. At every level, WWF collaborates with people around the world to develop and deliver innovative solutions that protect communities, wildlife, and the places in which they live. WWF works to help local communities conserve the natural resources they depend upon, transform markets and policies toward sustainability, and protect and restore species and their habitats. Their efforts ensure that the value of nature is reflected in decision-making from a local to a global scale. WWF connects cutting-edge conservation science with the collective power of their partners in the field, more than 1 million supporters in the United States and 5 million globally, and their partnerships with communities, companies, and governments. Today, human activities put more pressure on nature than ever before, but it’s also humans who have the power to change this trajectory. Together, we can address the greatest threats to life on this planet and protect the natural resources that sustain and inspire us. Reference: https://www.worldwildlife.org/
Just some of the WWF’s accomplishments in 2023. In keeping with their vision of “repair not despair,” the WWF focused on building upon the UN’s COP15 landmark Kunming-Montreal Agreement to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030. In addition to this focus, the WWF achieved the following successes:
- After two decades of work, a UN Treaty was achieved that protects marine life in the vast areas of the ocean that are not controlled by any particular nation. Until 2023, these huge areas were left unprotected from unsustainable industrial fishing and shipping. With the Treaty now in place, the WWF will work to support the newly protected areas, including the precious sea life that lives there.
- After years of work by the WWF, the EU deforestation regulation was adopted in 2023, making it illegal for European companies to put products on the market that have been linked to deforestation. (This is why ecobrands® sources only FSC-certified inputs.)
- Through the efforts of a coalition for human rights of which WWF was a part, 193 UN member states recognized the universal right to a clean, healthy, sustainable environment. This means that governments can now be taken to court for not protecting people’s right to a healthy environment.
- With respect to wildlife, the WWF helped achieve the first ever global declaration for river dolphins, helped the elephant population remain stable in Southern Africa, saw the African Rhino population increase by 5.2%, and officially protected around 90% of shark and ray species from being traded internationally if it threatens their survival.
